|Walker County, Texas was one of the most beautiful counties in the State of Texas. It was blessed with hundreds of spring fed streams teeming with fish. Its magnificent forests of magnolia, dogwood, pecan, hickory, oak and pine gave sustenance to abundant wildlife of many species including bears, cougars, red wolves, and bison. Ivory-billed woodpeckers were abundant as well as hundreds of other species of birds.
Walker County today is a sad shadow of its former self. Its forests have been ripped to shreds and destroyed by wholesale clear-cutting. Its streams are polluted and most springs have ceased to flow year-round. Citizens are forced to pay for drinking water from one of the few remaining springs at a cost far in excess of the price of gasoline.
The highways and roadways of Walker County are littered with trash. There is no planning for quality growth which has resulted in miles of muddy roads leading to instant slums of abandoned trailers and run-down houses.
At the present rate of cancerous growth, the quality of life in Walker County, Texas will soon be of a lower standard than that of many Third World Nations.
Please help our county leaders understand that laissez-faire growth is not only destroying the beauty of Walker County, Texas but AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL is rapidly becoming AMERICA THE UGLY because of lack of leadership and concern about our future in hundreds of other counties across this great land of ours.
